Deacon Manuel Montiel Olivas passed away Dec. 3 at the age of 92. Deacon Olivas was born on May 14, 1930 in Montoya, Texas, to Miguel and Mercedes Olivas. He and his late wife, Socorro, were married on June 7, 1952, and remained so for over 67 years until her passing in December 2019.
Deacon Olivas was ordained to the Permanent Diaconate on June 11, 1981 by Bishop Phillip F. Straling, and assigned to Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission, Belltown, from 1981-1982. His other assignments as a deacon were St. Charles Borromeo, Bloomington (1982-2002), St. Bernardine, San Bernardino (2002-2003) and St. George, Fontana (2003-2011, when he petitioned for retired deacon status).
