If Dr. Michael Downey’s 12th book Living the Justice of the Triune God was a homecoming of sorts, the road home was a long and winding one.
Downey, who is the official theologian of the diocese and director of the Office of Continuing Formation of Priests, co-wrote the book with a longtime mentor and friend, Father David Power.

BLOOMINGTON—Tears of joy and shouts of “viva San Carlos Borromeo! Que viva!” rang out as the St. Charles Borromeo parish community celebrated the dedication of its new worship space at a special Mass on June 30.
After 17 years, the community has realized its dream of building a new church for the ever growing community. Bishop Gerald Barnes, Auxiliary Bishop Rutilio del Riego, current and former pastors of the parish and other clergy gathered to celebrate with the parish.

SAN BERNARDINO—In an announcement made May 22, Bishop Gerald Barnes named Sister Sara Kane, C.S.J., the new chancellor of the diocese. She began her appointment July 1.
“I stand on the shoulders of so many good people of the past,” Sr. Kane said. “I humbly offer my passion to really assist Bishop Barnes in any way I can for God’s people.”
SAN BERNARDINO—The United States Supreme Court issued two controversial rulings in June that directly touched issues of moral importance to the Catholic Church.
Bishop Gerald Barnes responded with words to the faithful in both cases.

VICTORVILLE—The enormous big rig accelerated into the intersection as the light changed from red to green. The truck driver raised his arm high, pulling down hard on his horn which blared in support as he drove past the families lining Palmdale Road bearing signs declaring “No Planned Parenthood in Victorville” and “Women Deserve Better.”
THERMAL—After nearly a decade Sister Gabi Williams, O.P. will be leaving her ministry as a consultant to the diocesan Office of Social Concerns in the Eastern Coachella Valley on July 1.
Fortunately, she won’t be going too far.
