The list of 35 priests was posted to the diocesan web site and received significant coverage in local and regional media.
“When we read this list we are pained to think of the many lives that were impacted by the sinful and unlawful acts of those priests who committed them,” Bishop Gerald Barnes wrote in a letter posted along with the names. “Some will recognize names on this list, more will recognize the parish communities where they served. It makes this crisis more local to us, and may increase our feelings of sadness and outrage.”
Bishop Barnes also encouraged anyone victimized by a priest on the list, or any other clergy, to come forward and report it to the Diocese or to authorities. The Bishop also released a video message with the list reflecting the same themes, including the actions taken by the Diocese to address the scandal since it first emerged in 2002. According to the list, the Diocese has received six credible allegations of abuse over the past 16 years, only three of which actually occurred during that period.
“The Diocese of San Bernardino has worked hard to address this problem, and it has resulted in a drastic reduction in allegations of abuse in this century, as the list shows,” Bishop Barnes said in his video message. “I pledge to you that we will continue in our commitment to protect children and youth from abuse, and to do all that we can in prayer and action to bring healing to victims.”
