Mass was celebrated by Father Stephen Porter, with Deacon Mike Juback assisting him.

More than two dozen people attended, including many from Gifted and Called, an LGBT faith sharing group based in Palm Springs. The theme of the evening was “Give Me Strength,” and Fr. Porter spoke on the topic, tying the scripture readings of Advent to individual spiritual journeys of those in attendance.

“We are called to be in the Body of Christ in our parishes and to be part of the life of our parishes,” Fr. Porter said.

Fr. Porter’s discussion also included a reading from Pope Francis’ forthcoming book, “Our Father: Reflections on the Lord’s Prayer.” Fr. Porter translated a passage from the Italian language book, which is scheduled to be released in English in March 2018.

The Ministry to Family and Friends with Gay and Lesbian Catholics, which began nearly two decades ago, recognizes that all of God’s children are gifted and called for a purpose in God’s design. The ministry hosts a monthly potluck at various parishes throughout the Diocese after celebrating the parish’s Saturday vigil Mass.

The Mass and potluck typically take place on the second Saturday of the month.
