In his World Mission Sunday message, Pope Francis said “On this World Mission Sunday, all of us are invited to ‘go out’ as missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience in order to bring the message of God’s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family.”
World Mission Sunday was established by Pope Pius XI in 1926 as a way to “foster understanding of the greatness of the missionary task, encourage zeal among the clergy and the people, and offer an opportunity to make the Society for the Propagation of the Faith ever more widely known and encourage offerings for the missions.”
Each year about $50 million is generated which enables missionaries serving in 1,111 dioceses throughout Asia, Africa, parts of Latin America and Europe, and on the islands of the Pacific to reach out to communities, families and children in desperate need.
On this day, Catholics are called at Mass to recommit themselves to their vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries and to be missionaries of mercy through prayer and participation in the Eucharist, and by giving to the collection.
