Catholic teaching on the death penalty stems from our belief in the dignity of every human person and involves a call to set aside unnecessary violence, including violence by the state. The November 8 ballot will give Californians an opportunity to replace the death penalty with a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Another state ballot measure, Proposition 66, seeks to expedite the execution process so that more people are put to death. The California Bishops formally oppose this measure.
The Office of Restorative Justice will present information about Catholic teaching on the Death Penalty in a series of meetings leading up to the election, held in each Vicariate of the Diocese. The information will be offered in English and Spanish unless specified below.
