At the beginning of Mass, the procession entered the field from the team dugout led by a cross bearer, altar servers, lectors, and Bishop Gerald Barnes and Auxiliary Bishop Rutilio del Riego. The altar was placed between home plate and the pitcher’s mound adding to the uniqueness and excitement of the outdoor liturgical experience for the faithful gathered. In thanksgiving for family life, those in attendance came to worship, sing, and celebrate the Eucharist.
Immediately following Mass, a video was projected on the jumbotron highlighting Catholic Charities’ care for the poor and disadvantaged in our local communities. Then adults and children alike enjoyed various games and activities on the field, opportunity drawings, free photo booth pictures, and concession food that provided families with the opportunity to sit down and share a meal together. At 2 pm, the first pitch was thrown for the minor league baseball game between the Inland Empire 66ers and the Visalia Rawhide.
“I think the Faith, Fathers, Family & Fun event could be the beginning of something new and exciting in our Diocese to celebrate all families,” said Ken F. Sawa, Executive Director of Catholic Charities San Bernardino-Riverside.
