Sacred Heart also focused with special intention on the issue of hunger. Before lunch each day a prayer was said by the whole school to end world hunger. Students were encouraged to bring their own lunch from home, and all money that would have been used to purchase take-out food was donated to a food bank in response to Pope Francis’ call to end hunger.
On Wednesday of Catholic Schools Week each grade presented a dance or song from a country that the class had been studying all month long. Parents donated food items from each country that was chosen and decorated our outside area with traditional decorations.
Finally, on Friday, the students built a food tower to End World Hunger. All week they had collected canned food items to donate to the parish food bank.
Last year Sacred Heart students collected 1,365 non-perishable food items. This year parish seminarian Tomas Guillen challenged the school to collect 500 more food items than last year. If the students collected 1,865 food items by the end of the week Tomas promised to shave his head. He has been growing his hair since September to prepare for his challenge. What Tomas did not know is that Sacred Heart students take the Pope’s message very seriously and welcomed the challenge to end world hunger.
