RIVERSIDE—The Knights of Columbus, Monsignor Flanagan Fourth Degree Assembly 0059, Riverside, conducted their annual “Patriotic Essay Contest” for seventh and eighth grade students in the five parochial schools within its jurisdiction of Riverside, Corona, Norco and Eastvale.

The topic this year was: “Why I Appreciate Our American Veterans.” Each of the three schools that participated selected four of their best essays to represent their school and then a three-member committee from the Assembly judged the 12 essays submitted. St. Edward Catholic School swept all four cash prizes – only the second time in recent years, with a school average score of 88!

The winners were: First Place – Liana Jeciel, Second Place – Ryan Bordner, Third Place – Dana Santiago, and Fourth Place/Honorable Mention – Matthew Espares. Faithful Navigator Michael Hall presented the awards to the students during the school’s Seventh and Eighth Grade Award Ceremonies on June 1 and June 7.
