On Jan. 12, The Baptism of The Lord, Father Arturo Chavez, a retired priest of the diocese, passed away in Sun City at the age of 88. An ordained priest for 33 years, he served as Administrator of St. Joan of Arc Parish, Blythe and Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, San Bernardino and St. James the Less Parish, Perris, before retiring in 2001. Father Arturo had been ill for some time due to dementia and other health issues. He passed away peacefully in the company of his caregivers at Sun City Gardens where he had lived in the past year. Bishop Alberto Rojas celebrated a Mass of Resurrection for Fr. Chavez at St. James the Less Church on Feb. 7 with the burial rite immediately following at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Colton.
