John David Valdez, born on December 1, 1961, a former Youth Minister, Knight of Columbus, Cursillista, and Confirmation Catechist at several diocesan parishes, was called home to our Lord on August 4, after his battle with illness. John’s faith journey began at San Salvador, Colton, where he received his sacraments and was an altar server. Later, he took on catechist roles at Our Lady of Guadalupe, San Bernardino, San Salvador, Immaculate Conception, Colton, and St. Charles Borromeo, Bloomington. John later took on the role of Youth Minister at Christ the Redeemer, Grand Terrace, for 15 years. During those years, he also served as a confirmation catechist at St. George, Ontario and later at Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral in San Bernardino. In all, John’s life was dedicated to the Catholic Church for over 30 years. John’s role models were St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta and St. Pope John Paul II. John’s kind nature and accepting heart made him easy to talk to.  Many saw him as a role model, confidant, and Godfather, to which he accepted the honor 49 times; always saying he would never say no if someone should ask. Being a Godfather was his biggest achievement. He took pride in all of his Godchildren’s’ accomplishments and guided them in their struggles. As a youth minister for Christ the Redeemer, he guided the youth with his impactful life stories, where he shared his inspiring encounters with the Lord. From youth fundraisers, Diocesan events and ministry nights, to his day job as a school bus driver for the Redlands Unified School District for 20 years, John’s enthusiasm was always there and his patience for the youth did not waiver. John received the Our Lady of Guadalupe Award from the Diocese of San Bernardino in 2017. He will forever be remembered as a brother, friend, and a huge advocate for young people in our Church. His impact will be felt forever through all those who knew him. John David Valdez was laid to rest on September 28, 2023, at Hermosa Gardens Cemetery.
