RANCHO MIRAGE—James Shea, Jr., whose generosity benefited many Catholic parishes, schools and social outreach ministries in the Coachella Valley, was called to eternal rest on January 12 at the age of 87.
Shea resided in Rancho Mirage and was an active parishioner and benefactor of Sacred Heart Parish in Palm Desert. A Mass of Resurrection was held for Shea at Sacred Heart on January 17.
He moved to the Coachella Valley in 1984 after retiring from a successful business career that saw him become Chairman and CEO of the famed Milton Bradley Company. Once in the desert he made his presence felt in community involvement. He became a Director of the Braille Institute, the Palm Springs Air Museum and the United Way of the Desert. Additionally he was a trustee of the Eisenhower Medical Center and a member of Sacred Heart Church’s Finance Committee.
In 2011 he received Bishop Gerald Barnes’ Episcopal Amar es Entregarse award for his longtime support of Catholic ministries in the diocese.
