Also announced are the first recipients of The Bishop’s Scholarship, a full-tuition, merit-based, four-year (renewable) award given annually to an eighth grade student matriculating from a parish partner school to one of the three Catholic high schools in the diocese.
Notre Dame High School’s mission as a Catholic school ministry in the Diocese of San Bernardino is to prepare students for college in the finest Catholic tradition, grounded in faith, active in scholarship, and engaged in community. Each partner school applicant must prepare a portfolio demonstrating how they have exemplified Notre Dame’s three pillars of Faith, Scholarship, and Community while attending their parish school, and how continuing their Catholic education at Notre Dame will allow them to further build upon these pillars. All eighth grade students from Notre Dame’s partner schools are eligible to apply for the scholarship and one scholarship is awarded to a student from each school.
This year’s recipients are: Alonzo Javier (St. James, Perris); Tawny and Tiffany Nguyen (St. Thomas, Riverside); Matthew Bugarin (St. Catherine, Riverside); Shane Seratt (Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Riverside); Jensen Gomez (St. Edward, Corona); Nadia Bravo (St. Francis de Sales, Riverside); and Nicholas Diaz (Resurrection Academy, Fontana). Congratulations to all recipients and a very special thank you to the participating parish pastors and pastoral coordinators for their support.
The purpose of the Bishop’s Scholarship is to honor and financially support a partner school student and family that has dedicated itself to Catholic Education. Bishop Barnes wishes to honor some of the finest students attending the Catholic schools of our Diocese, while providing the family with financial support in their pursuit of a quality Catholic education. Please wish these freshmen good luck and Godspeed. The inaugural awardees for 2013 are Joshua Peck (Notre Dame High School from St. Edward School, Corona) Khaeryst Estrella (Aquinas High School from Our Lady of the Assumption, San Bernardino) Ivan Palamino (Xavier College Preparatory High School from Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Indio).
