The College and Career Expo was held to bring information on careers, bring hope and optimism for the future, educate parents, and emphasize the need to graduate college ready. Presenters talked about their career formation and the importance of homework to build good habits. Delila Vasquez, President of the San Bernardino Catholic Elementary Schools (SBCES) asked presenters to include this message in their presentations: Success is possible when projects are timely delivered. This is only possible when we are disciplined in meeting timelines. For students, this means doing homework and turning assignments on time.
During the event, students from Holy Rosary Academy, Our Lady of the Assumption School and Our Lady of Lourdes School met professionals in groups of eight in a round table style. The students engaged and learned about professions such as regional director, project manager, FBI agent, therapeutic private practice, business owner, religious vocations and more. In addition parents were offered sessions presented by the Binational Parent Leadership Institute Board to guide them in becoming their child’s advocate and a community leader. Parents joined students in touring the campus and heard from the University’s representatives about how to construct a path for their children to access higher education.
Dr. Tomas Morales, CSUSB President, told parents and students in his welcoming remarks, “when you walk through our campus you will see faces that look like you, they should inspire you and attest to the infinite possibilities you can find in higher education.”
The event was planned by Vasquez and the SBCES Board in collaboration with Dr. Enrique Murillo, CSUSB Professor and President of Latino Education and Advocacy Days (L.E.A.D.); the National Latino Business Women Association, IE; and Karen Ilianna Serrano Suarez, M.S., Executive Director of The Dominguez Dream, formerly The Vanir Foundation.
