Father John Gunningham, who is a hospital chaplain in the diocese, celebrated his 75th birthday on Feb 4 with Bishop Alberto Rojas, Bishop Emeritus Gerald R. Barnes and brother priests.
“We’re grateful today to God for the gift of the priesthood, especially the gift of Father John,” Bishop Rojas said.
During the homily, Fr. Gunningham said that he decided to have this birthday celebration for his parents to thank them for raising him in the Catholic Church, which led him to the priesthood.
“Being 75 doesn’t mean the end of anything… 75 is the new 45,” Fr. Gunningham said after reflecting on his years of service. He then thanked the bishops, priests, deacons, altar servers, choir, parishioners and friends who have supported him.
