In the past this annual event has highlighted the richness that can be found in diversity and multicultural communities. The event allows a time for prayer and then a sharing of the cultures through sharing of food while listening to various types of music. It is always a time of rejoicing as we gather and celebrate that in God’s eyes, we are one people.

Bishop Gerald Barnes will be the principal celebrant of the Mass. He will be joined by Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus Rutilio del Riego.

Also scheduled to concelebrate are Cardinal Roger Mahony, Bishop David G. O Connell and Bishop Alexander Salazar from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Leaders from other denominations and faiths have also been invited to attend.

The Migration Mass is certainly a celebration of the many cultures of the Diocese, with attendees encouraged to wear their native attire and share their unique foods, dances and songs. However, this year the Mass will focus greater attention on the worldwide refugee crisis, the struggles with this country’s broken immigration system and it will address negative narratives against migrants in the national dialogue.

The Diocese invites all to pray and stand in solidarity with refugees; to practice mercy by embracing the stranger and treating them with the same dignity given to all people by God.

The Migration Mass begins at 1 pm. Our Lady of Soledad Church is located at 52-525 Oasis Palm Ave. Coachella, CA 92236.
