FONTANA—This spring members of Genesis, the youth group at St. Mary parish, Fontana, along with Father  Al Utzig, brought in some goat and cow manure, turned over the soil, and planted 38 Russian Mammoth sunflowers.

FONTANA—Fontana Catholics had much to be festive about as two parishes celebrated key anniversaries within a week of each other. St. Mary Parish, Fontana celebrated its 75th anniversary on April 27 and St. George Parish, Fontana celebrated its 60th anniversary on May 4. 

 Father Romeo Seleccion, M.S., Episcopal Vicar of the San Bernardino Pastoral Region, joined the St. George Parish community for its anniversary celebration.

INDIO—The Tabernacle may be destroyed, but the parish is not.

 Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish community is now helping itself after a series of burglaries, the latest leaving the church without its tabernacle and sound system. 

 “I felt like they were taking my heart. I started to cry,” said Pastoral Coordinator Laura Lopez.

FONTANA—Following the April 27 canonization of St. John XXIII, the Fontana-Rialto parish celebrated the sainthood of the its namesake with a Mass and reception May 17. 

 Bishop Gerald Barnes presided over the local celebration at the Fontana site of the parish community. The celebration drew parishioners from both sites and faithful from neighboring parishes.

 In his homily, Bishop Barnes recounted some of the actions of St. John XXIII and called on the faithful to model themselves after him.

MURRIETA—Tom Woodward did not want to attend a workshop “for old people,” but he was happy he did. 

 And he was joined by more than 70 others at a half-day retreat on Feb. 12 at St. Martha Parish, Murrieta, geared specifically for seniors.

 The retreat, “Spirituality and the Seasons of Life,” sought to shed light on the stages of personal development and to encourage seniors toward deeper levels of trust and relationship with younger generations.
