In the spirit of sportsmanship, they chose to share their first place trophy with Our Lady of Guadalupe, Ontario, the team they narrowly defeated in the championship game. The second place trophy then went to the team from Holy Innocents Parish, Victorville and finishing in third place was Our Lady of Hope, San Bernardino.
In the Women’s Soccer competition, the team from Our Lady of Guadalupe, Ontario captured first place with St. Christopher, Moreno Valley finishing in second place.
The Diocesan Sports Tournament also includes the Best Sportsmanship Award for the parish that best displays that trait during the games. This year San Salvador/Immaculate Conception from Colton received that honor and with it a $250 check from Catholic Charities San Bernardino-Riverside.
To further ground the event in Catholic spirituality, a new tradition was started to open this year’s tournament. Each team was invited to process into field area with a chosen image of Mary. After all of the images had been brought in Bishop Gerald Barnes blessed them.
