St. Hyacinth Academy sixth grader Andres Gonzalez won gold in the Junior Division at the Riverside County RIMS Science Fair and placed in the Top 600 for the national Broadcom Masters Competition for his project “Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Clean, Don’t Let Fungi Turn Me Green.” Andres will move on next to the State Competition in May, but he also has a chance to win a trip to Washington D.C. and meet President Barak Obama through Broadcom.
Meanwhile, St. Adelaide Academy students Nick Sablan and Mary Monaghan advanced to the California State Science Fair at the California Science Center on April 15-16. This year there were 1,037 participants from 413 schools throughout the State presenting projects in competition for over $50,000 in total awards.
Nick, an eighth grader, presented his project “Microwave Safe.” He was so thrilled to have his display set up underneath a wing of the Space Shuttle Endeavor! Mary, a seventh grader presented her project “Children’s Clay Sculpture: A Study on the Influences and Relationships with Human Figure Drawing.” She placed second (silver) in her category in the Junior Division. Mary said she also loved the experience of just being there. “We were winners already just to be able to win gold at the RIMS county fair a few weeks ago.”
St. Edward sixth grader Aaron Parker won a gold medal at the Riverside County RIMS Fair for his project “Levitating Train” and went onto to state competition. Sacred Heart Academy eighth grader Ria Laxa also captured a gold medal at the San Bernardino County RIMS Fair for her project “UV Detection for Medicine Protection, earning her an invitation to state competition and Broadcom.
