Held Feb. 1 at the Diocesan Pastoral Center, the State of SBCES gathering featured talks on educational issues, information about achievements at Holy Rosary Academy and Our Lady of the Assumption School, and the students, themselves, who sang and presented prize winning essays.

The event was coordinated by SBCES President Delila Vasquez, whose ministry centers on raising community awareness and support of the city’s two Catholic elementary schools. She was joined by her advisory board, which consists of Carla Ford-Brunner (Chair), D. Bing Turner (Co-Chair), Lysette Soto (Secretary), Niko Houston, Maria Fernanda Torres, Lawrence Potter Cecelia Herrera Bolbolian, Henry Gonzalez, Maria Echeverria, Sonia Navarro and Hector Murrieta. The SBCES Board reported at the meeting that it raised $43,146 last school year for tuition assistance and other scholarships.

It was also announced that a scholarship endowment will be established in the name of Father Bob Miller, a longtime pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Cathedral who passed away last November. A pledge of $10,000 toward the Endowment was announced. Fr. Miller will be posthumously honored with the Pillar Angel Award at the SBCES Guardian Gala this year.
